В отличие от цикла про Чарли Чана, Петер Лорре был единственным исполнителем роли мистера Мото, хотя, надо признать, экранная жизнь этого героя была слишком коротка (1937―1939) из-за его японской национальности и приближения войны. Элегантный (часто одетый в белое), с необычной походкой и дикцией, щупловатый на вид, Мото в действительности – опасный боец, знаток джиу-джитсу; он способен отправлять в нокаут (в данном случае – за борт) гораздо более грузных соперников. Помимо прочих своих талантов, он весьма поднаторел в искусстве переодевания, карточных фокусах и мастерстве иллюзиониста.
